Ah yes it’s been a while since I’ve written about any of the crap that I find myself doing, watching or whatever. But this time as the title says it’s about FF XIII which I was quite amazed when I read that the company (Square Enix) lost so much money with it. I mean why? I haven’t reached the…
I hated, HAAAAAATED Final Fantasy XII. The thing is, I love Final Fantasy (although, not so much, it’s really IV V VI VII IX and X that I liked, it’s more Nobuo Uematsu that I love) and I tried, I tried so hard to love the new games. X-2 was a mess, that was just, such a basic failure in sequential storytelling. Also, yeah, that 15 year old girl in the last game, clearly, CLEARLY wasn’t naked enough in the first game ……….
I just couldn’t get into XII, I can see that it’s probably not that bad a game, but I just couldn’t get into it, I got to the palace, and that’s about it.
and XIII… see, the other games at least had a modicum of strategy. Final Fantasy XIII plays itself. Seriously, you walk down a corridor the whole game, and then you just let your characters fight the battles, themselves… maybe you chance the paradigm around to a healing or a tanking paradigm, that’s about it…
If I wanted to watch a story play out with no input on anything, I’d watch a film. And the story didn’t grab me, like, it fails in basic storytelling techniques. In VII your character is an outsider, also, kind of a fucking nut job too, so you have a vehicle for exposition, in X, the character doesn’t come from the world, AT ALL, so everything is explained to you, when it is explained to him.
Final Fantasy XIII gives you a book to read… chapter by chapter… I mean, can you… Picture this, you’re watching say… Game of Thrones, and instead of following the story in the dialogue they put into the show, they give you the books to read between episodes… whilst the episode can be watched instantly… I mean… it’s bullshit, it’s horrible.
And I tried, I really really tried to play it, and give it a good chance, my girlfriend got it to me, I love that, and it kills me even more that I didn’t enjoy it because of it.
…Apparently XIII versus looks pretty cool though.

Does this sound paranoid? You state that autism “does not seem like something that would cause that pressure to form” .. really? Are you aware that there’s material out there comparing autism to cancer, saying how an autistic child will ruin your life and your marriage (!?) and throwing terms like “soulless” around and that this is coming from “the World’s largest autism advocacy organisation” for goodness sake. You really think this wouldn’t have a distorting impact on people’s reproductive decisions, really?

Action was taken after a 26-year-old County Down man took his own life using drugs he had purchased online. Matthew Davidson had Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. After attempting suicide several times with medicine prescribed in Northern Ireland, Matthew turned to the internet to buy Tramadol.

Things I like and things I don’t
I like;
Meridian, looks a great deal like the Humans started to huddle together for safety during the Vampire’s rise to power. Like it’s one bastion of safety left in Nosgoth, it mirrors the Human city in Soul Reaver, however unintentionally.
Kain gets some sweet threads… SOME. I’m not digging his Red Riding Hood outfit.
The Fact that Kain didn’t create the lieutenants who betrayed him, it gives a reason for his raising his own afterwards (although I’m sure he knew how to sooner in the original Timeline, it seems more like Vorador was resurrected out of necessity than anything else).
The comment that Kain can hide his presence where as Vorador’s vampires can’t, again, logical, Kain was created through Mortanious’ necromancy, all the other Vampires were created through the blood curse.
The ‘Sarafan’ are walking around looking like the Hylden, it’s as if they want to remind the Vampires to know who’s in charge.
The Oracle. Getting to see an actual Hylden, uncorrupted from banishment is possibly the number one reason to play this game.
I don’t like;
The lack of narration.
It’s nowhere nearly as well written as the other games
Whilst Meridian feels right, the rest of the game feels nothing like Legacy of Kain, this could be from the Hylden being around for 400 years but I’m not so sure…
I have NO idea what the craic is with the Eternal Prison.
Their attempts at humour in the start of the Eternal Prison level are just pathetic.
What happened to Vorador’s Chin?
The combat is HORRIBLE
The Mist is poorly used through most of the Meridan section

So I just finished Duke Nukem Forever.
And I actually had a blast playing it. It was like stumbling upon a game from one of your favourite franchises that you never new existed.
Everything I said still stands though, it’s an old game masquerading as a new one, alot of people will be pissed off by it and I’m behind them 100%, because lets face it, nothing is going to hold up to 14 years of development time.
I really enjoyed it, and I hope this means a new Duke Nukem, preferably within 2/3 years this time guys.
US PSN...
Is so much better than the EU’s PSN. There, I said it.
It’s like pulling teeth trying to find a PSX game that’s actually worth downloading. Within two seconds of popping on the the US store I found Blood Omen, Bloody Roar 1-3, Silent Hill and Castlevania.
Seriously, mind is blown.

Being in a band makes you essentially self-employed
Today I organised a P.A., some early promotion on Facebook, and hopefully a poster for a gig my band’s playing.
Whist doing this I was in my pyjama’s playing Duke Nukem.
That was literally my day.
Now I get to spend time with my Girlfriend watching old school Pokemon cartoons.
I’m actually really enjoying Duke Nukem Forever, and I’m enjoying it for what it is.
It’s mutton dressed as lamb.
It’s clearly the game 3D Realms were supposed to put out a few years back when they had the shock reveal at E3. But it’s also clearly a game that was designed by people who haven’t played a modern shooter, let alone made one. It’s got some basic level design, which yeah, Duke 3D had as well, but there were more elements of exploration in it, and they’ve really cheapened the Pig-Cops.
But it also really shows that 2K turned to Gearbox and said, ‘here’s the stuff 3D Realms had, put it together and ship it’ and I think they’ve done a great job with what they had.
Bottom line, I think one of the characters said it best, it’s a relic of a by-gone age.
But I hope it does well, I honestly do, because if it does well it indicates to 2K that the franchise is worth investing in, and we might actually get a brand new modern Duke.
